As some of you have might have read, during the Snowy weather the radio reception became lost and would not pick up any AM/FM station in the normal way. As I am a bit of a 6006 fan, despite it's reliability problems, I thought I'd have a go at fixing it myself. :)

Working on Ford logic that it would make sense for them to have one factory make the radio part and another the CD autochanger part and join them together with a ribbon cable or the like, I set out to find a 6006 with a changer fault and found one on ebay for £39.

After stripping the donor radio down, I ended up swapping the motherboard which included the workings for the radio tuner into my 6006E. Once back in the Puma, I entered the radio code of the donor and away we go. All fixed. :D

This is the motherboard which is at the bottom of the unit. This section seems to operate the radio tuner and give the unit it's identity and hold data on station pre-selects, RDS setting, etc.

The top part of the unit is the 6-disc changer. This connects to the motherboard via a multiplug on it's underside.

did similar thing with my ford mp3 unit - swapped the fascias around with another unit

the unit failed last year - gave up on replacing it via ebay as the units are getting too old now

so, stripped out the cd mechanicals and put an mp3 board inside wired to the cd changer

don't have to worry about mechanical failure anymore but still keep the original look
RPJ DAMPENERS - POWERFLEX ALLROUND - JANSPEED SS SYSTEM - SOLD - probably in bits now...

I loved the 6006E in my Focus as it had the auto volume control. The CD side went wrong though, so I now have a Kenwood unit.

I'd have the Ford unit back if I could guarantee reliablity.

I seem to recall that most of the better specc'd Ford stereo's of the era had AVC, but it only worked in Focus and Mondeo, I think because the Puma / Fiesta / Escort / Ka didn't have the VSS connection to the back of the head unit.

That is correct indeed FB. :)

I like the simplicity and ease of use of the 6006, but if it goes wrong again, then I'd have to think more seriously about alternatives. :)

Would that not get in the way of your leg Paul? Looks a very neat install, but I'd worry I'd be forever knocking it off. :(

How did you wire it up? I looked into getting one of these but was told by a friend at Ford that it doesn't have it's own wiring loom and I'd be best getting an auto electrician to fit it, which gets too expensive. Did you make your own loom?

just cut the connectors out of the focus, and re join the wires. defo don't need an auto electrician.

no it fits perfect, i've never banged my knee on it, you will need to cable tie the stalk on, but it works perfect, i use it all the time now.

i've had it in my last 2 cars for about 20000 miles no problem.

defo reccomend it, you could always buy a spare cowl and try it, if you don't like it i'm sure you could sel it on ebay.

Paul.

edit found a better pic

Sorry to sound dumb but when you say cut the connectors do you mean both ends, steering column and stereo end?

yeah the wiring goes into the loom on the focus so just cut it of where it goes into the loom. i think, the connector on the radio was orange and has 3 wires going from it, and the other one is already on the stalk so just cut that as far back as you can.

the 3rd wire on the radio side i think was green. just cut that off. as its only need 2 wires to make it work.

Cheers. Got my remote now. How did you fix it to the column? Did you need to remove this bit...

yeah just snap that off or cut it off,

i have drawn a pic in paint to show you,

if you imagine looking at this pic from the end on the stalk, the black line in the middle is where the bit you cut off goes,

the 4 holes are where if you drill some small holes you can loop cable ties through them and then through the cowl.

just make sure it all sits flush.

As you seem to know a lot about taking it apart......

I have a perfectly working stereo, but want it to be silver as it matches the rest of the dash!

If i purchased a broken silver unit, how easy would it be to swap the facia?

Simple really. :) The front of the unit can removed by undoing the Torx fittings at the side of the unit. The front then can be gently pulled away and removed. The new silver facia can then be put into it's place. :D

Are you talking about a 6006E with the multi-changer CD?
Rick

The Haynes Fiesta Manual (3397) can answer a lot of your questions.

Sorry no, just the single CD EON 6000

If that is all u do, then that sounds pretty simple so i'll get searching for a broken silver radio :)
