I'm just installing sp3 onto my test pc to see what occurs. Early reports have
shown boot problems and crashes amongst other issues.

Anyone installed this service pack yet?

I've had the auto-advise over the last few days for "Downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929) (update 1 of 1)".

Have tried 8 times to download it. All I get is "preparing to download" and then a screen that tells me it has failed to install! ja_stupid.gif

if you use automatic updates, chances are you'll already have sp3, but in bits. its only really sp3 when on a fresh install
if at first you dont succeed parachuting's not your sport
Failure is not an option -- it comes bundled with Windows.

Had no problems on the test pc, although that was with a fresh install.

I'm cloning the drive and creating a restore point before I
attempt the install on the thinkpad.

If thats the case, why does it still tell me I should be downloading it?

Havent tried it yet.. still waiting a couple of weeks for bugreports and such before i try it on the laptop at home.
If that works without crashing, this pc is next. Can't be bothered with upgrading the laptop from work at the moment though; i need it badly at the moment, so if it were to fail.. yikes!

Sp3 is a cummulative update of all previous patches/hotfixes plus a few more new ones.

Got brave and installed. Works fine! (much smoother than sp2 install was)

So far, I'm reasonably impressed. Things seems quicker - menus, shutdown etc

Have heard folks with naughty xp have had trouble.

Reformatted in the end cause i didnt have the patience to mess with it. Ordering my IMAC next week anyway.
