Would you believe it, I've found out that the BMW Mini Cooper S has over 200 bhp (208 I believe), and that's just with a 1.6 litre engine! :o So then, what would it take to tune the FRP engine itself to the same bhp as the Mini Cooper? There's THESE plug-in electronic tuners that will give you about 7 bhp extra. Anything else?

And what's with the smaller engined Cooper getting such a great power boost over the FRP anyway?

supercharger is the reason the cooper has more power. forced induction, the replacement for displacement ;)
would imagine it would take a fair bit of cash to see a 200bhp puma :(
my other toy has 470bhp

FRP has 10 year old tech in it.

Cant see why supercharging a FRP wouldnt be possible. But Turbo Charging usually results in a popped engine.

There are at least two Puma owners on here with Turbo cars.
One has around 300 BHP.
I think it depends on how much money you want to spend as to how good / reliable a job you have done.
Put "Turbo Puma" in to Youtube, I think you should find one of them sprint racing.
Found one clicky
MK4 XR3i
Mk3 XR3i
R Reg 1.7 Puma
T Reg 1.7 Lux Puma
Now its Racing Puma 072

Apparently alot more then a turbo charger, SCs can cost about £1500. fitting is pretty much a 2 day job(make sure you get it done in a place that will test it). Vortech have some nice 14-20PSI superchargers that i was thinking about.

Alot of money for a small boost though, but its the safer option to a turbo.

(Edit - sorry got the pricing wrong XD was looking at a turbo kit XD)

Look for Volcomstone11's thread on how he supercharged his FRP

Standard Cooper S is approx 170HP, John Cooper Works is just over 200.

BMW Mk1 Cooper S had a supercharged Chrysler 1.6 engine
BMW Mk2 Cooper S has a turbocharged BMW/PSA 1.6 engine

Best way to 200HP in a Pumesta is probably a duratec conversion.

Is that for the SC alone or is that fitted? And how about Pumabuild?

What's that involve?

A Duratec is a Zetec renamed  or atleast the earlier versions.

What i would be interested to learn is the max amount of PSI the engine can hold before it does pop.

And the £1500 is for a brand new "made to order" SC from vortech.

Sorry, I should have specified a 2.0 or 2.3 Duratec-HE as used in 2001on Mondeo, 2002on Fiesta ST, 2005on Focus, various Ranger and Transit applications.

There have been a few people on zsoc with the 2.0 conversion, and it seems like a great improvement. Crucially over the Zetec it is a better design and is all alloy, like the Sigma engine, it is also the same way around as the Sigma, though I believe it does require a cable operated version of the IB5.

There are guys with Fiesta ST's who have done loads, Cosworth inlet plenums, superchargers, 2.3 conversions, etc. loads of potential, with lots of bits out there as the same engine is available in various US Fords too.

priorities for frp owners atm should be just about getting hold of 909 replacement parts

slapping more power into the standard 10yo chassis doesn't sound like a good idea to me...
RPJ DAMPENERS - POWERFLEX ALLROUND - JANSPEED SS SYSTEM - SOLD - probably in bits now...

But how much torque? Plus how would you mate a motorcycle engine to a front drive chassis, I don't think a chain drive would work!

At risk of thread hijacking, but still on a BMW tuning type theme:

Not saying i would want to do it myself. Didn't spend all that time looking for a low mileage, good condition FRP to start tearing it up. But just a bit more power would be nice.

Just wondered if it had been done?

Don't think the torque would be too much lower as the FRP engine isn't particulary high itself. But I agree it, probably wouldn't work unless the engine was chucked in the rear and the rear wheels were driven. However there are some BMW MC engines that use a crank to drive the wheels (not the S1000RR though). Probably be a very costly and technical experiment either way!

I have a Mk2 Mini Cooper S, and it's actually 175bhp from a 1.6. The JCW has 210bhp methinks.

Don't bother all you will do is end up spending money then loosing it when you sell as non original FRP aren't worth as much, just keep it mint.

Play to the FRP's strengths its cornering ability .

still loads of fun and reliable too.
