My son-in-law found himself in a similar position some time back. He bought a car at auction and it turned out there was another vehicle with the same registration. It worked out ok for him as his was the original car, the other was the subject of ID fraud.

if you bought and sold it in good faith you should have no worries in terms of criminal proceedings

If there are 2 cars with the same number plate someone is on the make - have you still got the invoice/receipt from when you bought the car? Have you got contact details for the person you bought it off?

Should the person you sold the car to take it any further (ie take any action against you) I would suggest taking the matter to the police - and advising the person you sold it to that you are doing so in an attempt to get them on board.

Hopefully it will not come to this - do keep us informed. Good luck.

ps it was an offence not to register the car yourself iirc

the new owner is coming over to talk about it he's said he's spoken to some chief of police guy who has told him not to involve the police but to speak to me about it am getting suspicious now

i phoned my insurance company and they have said they canceled the policy on the 4th june after the 7 day period and that it is currently showing uninsured but the new owner has said that there insurance has said it's currently insured

i have bought and sold loads of cars in the past but this is a first for me

i have a phone number for the previous owner he lives in aberdeen thats where i bought it

Sounds dodgy, either the new owner is trying it on or worse.

For starters, two cars can't be registered with teh same reg plate so even if there was another car out there with the same plate on it, it would not be registered, it would be a false plate.

Either that or the car you bought was the wrong plated one but that cant be or you would not have been able to get insurance.

When you typed the car reg into the hpi check how did it come up?

YOu went all the way to Aberdeen and parted with cash before checking the cars history? Bet you never do that again!

You can text reg plates now and it only costs a fiver. Well worth it. If it comes back clear, print the report and give it to the guy before telling him to try a different insurance company.

What kind/age of car was it? Just being nosy.

i have only ever checked the hpi on one car i have bought before ma bad!

but to be honest for what i paid for it it wasn't gonna be a big loss

the car is a VW sharan

ok HPI check done and it's showing the reg and VIN add up and it's never been reported stolen or been subject to an insurance claim or anything

oh feck!

my partner called him and it turned into a screaming match the guys kinda hard to understand as he's polish but basicly he has now said that he doesn't have a problem getting it insured and wasn't coming up as cloned as he said in the first convo!

now he's got angry and said that he was in a "life threating situation" on the motorway today and the police have advised him to speak to me wacko.gif

he won't tell me what happend in the car or whats ment to be wrong with it just that he's now taking me to court sad.gif

Sounds like he is trying it on. Unless the car is unroadworthy then he doesnt have a leg to stand on. Sold as seen is the rule.

I suspect the Polish guy has totally got the wrong end of the stick after being stopped by the police. He would not have come up as the registered owner when pulled over so Th ePolice will have asked fro the log book, he wont have known what one is so will have said you didnt give hm one then they wuld have said to get it from you or give the car back.

I will be surprised if it is not just crossed wires.

sounds like the guy is dodgy.

The usual policy with second hand cars is sold as seen unless youve made false claims which i doubt. This is why i always write "sold as seen" on a reciept.

If this guy is being threatening then report him to the police to protect yourself.

The car with the correctly allocated registration number can be checked against the VIN number on the Ford Itis site.
Enter the VIN number or registration number and it will give you the cross match as well as the date of registration, date of build, colour, spec etc.

If you can't use this system, PM me the Reg or VIN (or both) and I will do it for you.

I paid for an HPI report and that told me the VIN and Reg matched

on his first call today he said that the insurance said the car was a clone and he had spoken to police who said not to invlove them but to speak to me we arranged for him to come over to discuss this but after i got off the phone i posted here cause i was worried and then i did the HPI report which came back ok so my partner called him and told him our finding and he then said about the "life theatening situation" on the motorway he then got angry but wouldn't tell us what happend to the car or him for that matter to make him call me and then said he'd see us in court

my partner calmed down and tried to call back but he won't answer

I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you're having ohmy.gif

I can't see that you've done anything wrong, & maybe as been said, he might have his wires crossed & is panicking that he was stopped by the Police.

Please keep us informed on what happens.

Ann

if you do meet him I would suggest doing it on neutral ground, and where there are witnesses!
