195 / 125 / 100 / 200 Compression Test Results - Not Good? Engine pinking problem

Hi I did a compression test on my gf's 1.6 Puma and the results are 195 / 125 / 100 / 200 on 60k miles. That doesn't look good to me. We've had a problem with it pinking, and now blowing oil through the rocker cover breather.

What's best to do... have someone look at it or time to chop it in for something newer? I reckon the first option won't be cheap sad.gif

Not totally bad news.

The good side is that you have a pair of pistons down. That is unlikely to be a blown ring, and probably just the head gasket. The oil blowing through the rocker box breather is slightly more worrying, but if you need a new head gasket, they can check the state of the bore linings / rings with the head off. Just to be hoped the head is not warped.

get a leak down test done defore dismatling the engine... this is sort of a reverse compression test... and will pinpoint a problem more precisely...

Ok. Would it need the head skimming? Or is it just a matter of replacing the head gasket? Yea... if it's warped that's gunna be £££

Gasket failure does not neccesarily end up in a warped head, depends on how long the damage has been done and how hot the engine is getting.

Engine has never overheated since she's owned it (about 4 months) so that's good I guess.

Was just reading this.... http://www.aa1car.com/library/leakdown.htm suggests worn rings or cylinders for air coming our of breather.

i'm sure pistons rings are available for the 1.7... i think someone mentioned this a while back and 'burfyboy' found the part numbers...

I could recommend a good place to get this sorted too... wink.gif

Ye piston rings are available from ford but they are not cheap like £70 each!! i got a local machune shop to make mine custom for a fraction of the price...the only thing is when piston rings go on alloy engines it usually takes the liners with it im afraid! not to say that the liners will be gone so there is hope smile.gif

it is a 1.6 so it wont have bore liners like the 1.7 has.
Whether that makes it cheaper to sort no idea, but it is at least sorable whereas the 1.7 is fairly chocolate tea pot when the liners breakdown
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

if air is coming out of your breather, have you checked that the crankcase blow off valve isn't blocked? its under the intakes. suppose if it were blocked then the pressurised crank gases would get out via the pistons.
just my tuppence, useful or not....

Yep, that was one of the first things I replaced and it made no difference, but yes good idea could have the same symptoms!

Took it to a garage yesterday, they said it needed the head stripping down could be valves or seals. But then they said that might be a waste of money as it could be the bottom end which would be even more work.

Decided we are going to sell it sad.gif looks like it will cost more than it is worth to repair. I'm annoyed at the garage that sold it that fobbed us off, but also annoyed at ourselves for not insisting it was reapired within the 1 month warranty period.

Anyone got a 1.4 for sale?? smile.gif

You might be better off just getting a new engine, the 1.6's are fairly plentiful and inexpensive.

Yep thought of that one, found engines as cheap as £200ish but then theres probably at least £500 labour on top of that and still theres no garantee that it will be a better engine. It's just not worth it on a car this value IMO. Found some brand new 1.6's for about £1500 lol...

really? i thought they all had nikasil because they are alloy bocks? and the liners are needed to protect the alloy because a steel piston going up and down an alloy bore wouldnt last long?
