clicky me
bit of Open Source, but to be able to add RAW mode for example to an IXUS series camera is quite a feat and perhaps full of potential and there is no loss of original firmware too. Enough of a reason to buy one
I am shopping for a pocket camera for my Mum, I am liking the IXUS 80 (it fits the needs very well and image quality is OK for the format) and this on top makes it a very versitile little bundle, I would love one too
OK it bought the geek out in me

Colin, nah, but I would
just great to have that flexibility, plus that little open source does stuff like braketing too and other features that are just not present on the camera, even gives state of battery too.
I think it is tempting to try, we also haev a A530, I may load it on that to check it out
Pete, the actual raw original image taken and not as processed by the onboard Camera chip

But I think you'll find the teeny sensor is going to be the downfall of a Canon Ixus and no amount of clever tricks are going to avoid the limitations. If anything RAW is simply going to make the shortcomings of the sensor even more obvious which is why I think they don't include it in the first place.
And what's this talk of 'four third' size dSLRs...they look more like oversized bridge cameras to me but with all the fun of sensor dust...
Red looks absolutely

Thank you for your recommendations, in the end I got the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 for my birthday. I've only just started playing with it. Although it's got the manuel mode I'll probably just use the intellegent mode. Thanks again for your good advice.

OK i think
It produces a file equivilent to an undeveloped film cell, rather than equivilent to a developed photo like a JPG or TIFF is

Doesn't really have a manual mode as such...just an 'unintelligent' auto mode
Some of the scene presets are interesting, particularly Starry Night in conjunction with a tripod and 2 second self timer
Make sure you donwload and install the Panasonic Firmware update for the camera as it makes it more responsive...HERE.
