Hi,

I'm looking to buy a Puma and have found one, but it has a small patch of rear arch rust (about 2cm in diameter). The seller is willing to factor in the repair costs, but need a ball park figure. Also, anyone recommend a body shop in the Midlands that can do the work?

Thanks for any help.

I've been quoted £300 for the removal of rust, this includes cutting out the rust and welding in a new piece of metal.

Not sure if this is a good price, and very few people I spoke to would guarantee it won’t return.

Seems a lot of Puma’s are suffering sad.gif

there is a guide in the Wiki on seeing this rust from the inside, I expect unless that is treated it would only be short term.

thee is a buyers guide in the Wiki too, you may need to knock money of for a cam belt change too if it is a 1.7

Thanks for the quick feedback.

The car does have a full Ford service history, but I will be check the cambelt has been changed.

Waxoil guide will be the first thing I do to the car, but I will see if I can have a look from inside tomorrow to see how much rust there is.

Thanks again.

Good luck with it. Welcome to PP.com. When you get the carit would be good to see some photos. I take it it's a private sale?

Seems pretty daft to get it cut out if there is no guarantee it won't return 'cos the rust is on the arch it probably will return 'cos the wheel brings up stones and water and dirt all the time on those arches I'd get it sanded down first rust remover and primer it then give it a few coats then just look after it constantly and should be ok I have rust on the sill but I can't get mines cut out 'cos the force of the door closing all the time will eventually crack the sill 'cos the strength won't be as good as it is the now I think it's quite a strange place to get rust on the sills think I might get away with most of the rust 'cos it's right on the sill having said that when the door is close you can see a slight bubble developing which is worrying need to get it sorted quickly

By cutting out, I was referring to the part of the wheel arch that's rusted on my car, the body shop said if it's going to rust again, it will rust where the new metal's been welded to the existing panel - if that makes sense?

For rust on the sill, I would have thought that sanding down is the only option.

It does make sense what you're saying but still sounds stupid to go through all that when it's just going to come back. And I think I could maybe get away with sanding it down and filling it in and respray it a few coats and get away with it it's the little bit at the outside when the door is close you can actually see abit of rust from the outside

I agree, does seem stupid but I think the body shops are trying to cover their behinds a little. I found that none out of the 3 I've contacted would offer a guarantee, and 2 of these were main dealers (Ford & Vauxhall).

Seems the rear arch is a difficult area to correct.

The Vauxhall garage said they would normally give some form of guarantee with bodywork (not sure to what extent), but couldn't with the wheel arch. I'm not sure what to do, may just get it sanded and resprayed and see how I get on.

As for ebay adverts, I'd be reluctant with buying anything to do with rust removal. It's probably being sold by the same person that reckons I could buy a chip which increases the Puma's BHP by 20bhp - for £12.99 laugh.gif

I was quoted around £300 a side to have the arches cut out and metal replaced. This was at a Ford Bodyshop. I think its worth paying a bit extra and getting it repaired properly.

Good luck with getting the car.

Hi,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Update:

I have seen seven Pumas so far, five have had wheel arch rust and only two were clean. I have offered top of my budget for the best one, but might not be enough for the seller.

My search for Puma goes on...
