After months now of pratting around with my Fiesta and spending Hundreds of pounds buying parts for it....not to mention tripping up and down all over the country.. bhaaw.gif

FINALLY, i have sourced the root of all evil causing the Idle Flare issue on my fiesta... huh.gif

Check this out on your Puma's too if getting this issue!... it's a little loom connector near the front of the car ( look just under the front bumper ..drivers side) that connects up power steering.. mellow.gif

As you can see, the wire has just become brittle and broken off where it meets the connector...it's a little thin and flimsy to say the least.. mad.gif

Because of this, iv'e been buying parts for MONTHS which then led to even more probelms as the new Idle Control Valve i bought was actually faulty... wacko.gif Ford for some reason couldn't diagnose thsi despite having the car for two days... Richard at Tremona did go over the car much more thoroughly and recognised the ICV problem fairly easily and did a rework of the wiring loom for me to improve signal strength to the Throttle Position Sensor..TPS... all this did improve the running of the car, but still it would only settle on revs when car was at complete standstill...Richard seem to suggest this was normal... but having a previous 1.4 before i couldn't remember that being the case.... wacko.gif even so, the car when warmed up would not idle at the nice 940 revs... it would always sit at around 1100..grrr...

Anyway, i just found out this issue just by a passing glance at a topic on ZSOC forum, a guy described the EXACT same issue, and many owners piped up straight away as this being the problem, and sure enough it was.... if this is such a common issue why do garages not know about it... ja_stupid.gif

iv'e done a quick tempory fix using electrical connectors until i can source a new piece of wiring loom...

The car now runs sweet as a nut and idles perfectamundo... woot2.gif woot2.gif woot2.gif ja_cool.gif ja_cool.gif bleh.gif

Happy Lad...

I'll be checking this next chance I get, just in case as mine can sometimes continue revving for a second or so when braked to a stop.
Good work finding the fault, can't believe the amount of effort that was needed to find something so simple was the fault.

i presume so mate...but i know almost nothing about the in's and outs of power steering tbh.... blush.gif

sounds about right tho.... gods knows how this affects the idle in the way it does... quite subtle, but still annoying.... and clearly a difficult one to diagnose... especially when FORD only seem to be able to fix problems that generate a fault code... 1112202173.gif

I wondered why mine started to idle properly when I connected that plug (broken leads). I thought I'd done something to the ICV wiring!

That sensor's a pressure switch in the power steering pipe, so that when the car gets dry steered when ticking over, it doesnt stall from the load.

I have the exact same problem with my Puma !!! had a look today after seeing this post last night and hey presto .... broken !!! i have one problem though .... where the black plug goes into power steering i think the brown wire , thats broken also .... so this little plug has come loose too , problem is does it splice onto the the cable running directly to the power steering plug ? as it seems its not long enough to go directly to the direct black shielded cable ? i'll try and get a pic if anyone needs it .... thanks so much for a great forum too fellas and ladies. Also i have the overheating problem when queing in traffic , fan does not kick in , tried finding the coolant temp switch which is supposedly underneath the ht lead housing .... and there's nothing there ( i'm assuming its this ) please can someone point me in the right direction to solving this i'd be in your debt if you could !!!! Many Many Thanks !!!

Shaun.

p.s i have a Puma 2001 1.6 i love it too !!!

You may be describing the connection to the air con compressor which is on the same spur.

Coolant temp sensor is between plugs 2 and 3 on the 1.6. Does the gauge move on the dash?

Had this 'idle flare' problem over the last month or so and traced it thanks to this post to the same faulty plug. One wire was seemingly burned out and the terminals within the sensor are green with corrosion. The other wire just came away when I unplugged the switch, so realistically I need a replacement plug like the one pictured above at the start of this thread in order to fix it properly. Any suggestions where I can pick an old part like this up?

Thanks.

Could try your local Ford parts counter, as the part might well be still available new.
