I had to get some oil today but the garage only had Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 fully synthetic oil. I had Shell Helix 5w-30 in before which is recommended. What is the difference between the two and does it make much difference?

The operating temps and the 5-30 will be a semi synth and the 5-40 will be a fully synth.

So will 5w-40 operate at a high temp than 5w-30?

And what difference is there between semi synth and fully synth?

May be im being far too paranoid !!!

I'm not a mechanic, but I thought that you should not mix oils, so if you FRP currently has 5w30 semi syn that that is what you should top up with. If you want fully syn then you will need to do an oil and filter change.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

Oh poo. laugh.gif Bought some Shell Helix Ultra 5w40. Only after the guy in the Shell garage insisted they didn't make 5w30 anymore, and that 5w40 replaces is and didn't make any difference. I was in a rush and bought it.
Anyone know what make of oil Ford use? Need to top it up with that.
Or could I do a full oil change and change the lot to 5w40 Shell stuff? I've heard good things about it. Looking on their website, they don't do a 5w30 oil.
