Glowire ?

I have been toying with the idea of installing red Glowire as a 3rd highlevel brakelight. It's designed to be used in auto-applications, has low power-useage, and should be durable.

Anyone got any views on this ?

There is supposed to be one that is brighter, and I could allways put 2 or more beside eachother for added light-output. I'll have to see.

Could look good with a blueish glow from behind the rear speaker-grilles too :-)

It's rubbish. I've got some at home (The greeny white colour which is supposed to be the brightest). It's nowhere near bright enough. I also have a cold cathode which i was gonna use as a brake light but it's far too dim.

Worst £50 I've ever spent.

Damn :-( I thought the cold cathodes were brighter ? Ho hum, back to the drawing-board. Maybe some ultra-bright led's ?

You're joking yeah? Cold cathode lamps can be well bright!!! You ever stared into a scanner recently? Pure white light delivered courtesy of a 250mm x 2.5dia CFL smile.gif

I guess it depends where you got that CFL from and the spec of the power supply driving it..

Depends on what you want to do with it.. you can get short lengths from scanners and with a moderate amount of heat, reshape the tube into the form you desire... Brightness wise, they are well bright driven from a 12VDC power source smile.gif

Thinking about selling mine on ebay, and my glow wire.

I got them from www.litewave.co.uk

The LED brake light I just fitted is well good. I'll take some pics in a sec with the work camera and post here. biggrin.gif

Has anyone fitted a high level 3rd brake light to their Kat? just wondered what types were best.

I've just uploaded the pics of mine.

Pic of the brakelight:

You can see from these that the roof lining has bent a bit, but i should be able to fix this with some reinforced "duck" tape.

48 LED is nice and wide biggrin.gif

Led light looks nice, and I may well end up going for that, but I'm still thinking about doing soemthing different. :-)

Oooohhhh...

This site has woken the boy-racer in me. :-)

Undercar-lighting :-) Too bad it's £210 + £120 for a complete kit side and front and back. :-(

I wanted a solid strip which is why i bought the cold cathode, but as it was so dim i couldn't use it. I think the longer LED one looks cool though. Will be even better when i manage to straighten the roof lining properly.

Dan, I was thinking of using this for the footwells in the MX5 as it has only one very small courtesy light, if this would do the trick (don't want it too bright anyway) I might buy it from you if you wish to offload

Dan that looks good - was it the LED 'tube' that you used?

You're welcome to it. It is red though.

I know that the cold cathodes are bright enough, as i've fitted a couple to some showpiece PC's that i've built, the type with the see thru windows, but one thing I never took much notice of was their warm up or start up times, which I think would be pretty important in a high level brake light.
