Hi guys,

As title says, when i put the car into reverse gear it goes in but crunches and grinds like when you try and engage a gear before dipping the clutch. As i reverse off my drive i'm worried that i'll damage the gearbox.

I've tried double clutching and starting the engine with the clutch down but it always happens. Any ideas?

Mine does this on starting. I think you have to give it 10 secs or so after start up and it won't crunch. Unless this is happening all the time?

I've not had one Ford that this didn't happen to every so often. Select a forward gear then try again . If it still happens, select first, move forward slightly and then try again. It works for me.

You should alsways start a car with the clutch in, takes a load off the flywheel apparently.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

Its normal, the IB5 gearbox does not have a syncro mesh on the reverse gear. :)

OK i'll try putting it into 1st gear before reverse to see if it makes a difference. It does it every time, so its not just an intermittent issue. Does this crunching cause any damage is probably the most important question?

It's normal, it happened with my old Mk5 Fiesta too. If I remember correctly, it says in the manual to hold the clutch in for a few seconds before trying to engage reverse, this usually does the trick for me. If not, then pushing it in and out of 3rd before going into reverse seems to work for some reason!

ensure you are fully stopped, hold clutch down for 3 seconds, then select reverse. that was what ford said when asked about this.

Mine does this sometimes. I find if I take the pressure off the gearstick then lift and lower the clutch pedal then it will go into reverse.

Putting into 3rd before reverse works every time! Genius! :-)
