Hi all,

Not long had the Puma, it's a 1.7 Thunder, 100,000 miles and has a pretty good service history and quite a bit of money spent on it a few years ago so some of the stuff like rusty brake lines, and replacement rear drums have already been sorted.
The cambelt was done around 86,000 but it was 5 years ago so obviously the car has been used intermittently, and as this may see some track time I want the car to be as good as it can be.

My local Ford stealer have quoted me £450 to supply and fit a cambelt and tensioner (£320 of that figure is labour!), so understandably I laughed, said goodbye and went back to looking for someone else.
I understand that this engine is a bit of a complicated one for cambelt fitting, so don't fancy taking to just anybody - can anyone recommend one in the area? Bracknell or Reading would be ideal.

Cheers

I used to live in Reading but had a mate who was a mechanic so I always used him. However, I'm still in touch with a lot of people there so let me ask around and see if there are any personal recommendations. I'd personally always stay away from main dealerships when it comes to servicing and engine work.

Thanks Trixie much appreciated.

I actually have a new Focus RS too and the local dealer are just laughable, don't seem to know their arse from their elbow in terms of parts and service.
Ford really don't help themselves with the people they employ in my opinion, ruins the ownership experience of what is a very good brand in terms of the car.

It didn't help that to begin with their price for the belt kit and tensioner was marked up £50 over Ford Parts UK...
I've done rads, plugs, front mounts, discs pads and shocks in my time and am half tempted to try myself if the prices are all this steep!

Found a place locally that came recommended, half the price of the dealer and £285 with water pump, tensioner and belt. That's not genuine Ford parts but Euro car parts hence still guaranteed and probably more comeback than Ford would offer.

Have they done a 1.7 before?
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

I've seen them recommended on here before, and they're a Ford specialist, so I would certainly assume so.
The guy rattled off the which year, said so the 1.7 then etc etc he wasn't pausing to look anything up :).

Hello,

Change the water pump at the same time for the extra few quid because if it starts leaking you'll be paying to do the whole lot again. Posted Image

Which dealer was it? I live in the same sort of area so would be useful to know if they do a good job!

Thanks Chris; unfortunately you are miles away - if I had a racing puma would probably be worth the trip!

A place over in Langley, I forget the name.
Got some minor rust to fix first!
