I posted on here a year ago as I had a problem with theheating and air-conditioning: it was blasting out hot air whatever setting wasselected and even if the air-conditioning was switched on. My local garagechanged the heater valve, which didn’t solve the problem, so changed the heatercontrol panel as well. As the new Ford heater control panels are veryexpensive, I bought a second-hand one and the garage fitted it. It seemed towork for a while, but now I have exactly the same problem as I had last year: hotair blasting out regardless of setting or whether air-conditioning is on. Doesanybody have any suggestions as to what else could be wrong? I have a slightworry at the back of my mind that this could be a symptom of a deeper problem.

searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

First thing to do is to diagnose what is going on.

Unplug the heater control valve and connect either a multimeter (ideally analogue) or your right hand side repeater from the wing.

You are looking for:

Solid 12v / illuminate on full cold.

Solid 0v / extinguish on full hot.

Pulse widths of varying widths, the timing of which is dictated by the position on the dial.

ie. mostly on with snippets of off will be colder, mostly off with snippets of on will be hotter.

If you have the above patterns at your HCV plug then the valve is faulty. If you do not have the above patterns then your panel is faulty.

When buying, ensure valve is genuine Ford, used is OK but use 7N21 part number as per the latest supersede. Ensure panel is tested as above, if the seller is not aware of the above testing procedure ensure they are happy with the return when they sell you a duff one.

Also note none of the above has any connection to the air conditioning, we are talking above about introducing engine coolant to heat the cabin, or introducing ambient air in lieu of coolant-heated air.

If you want it air conditioned that's a whole new issue but it should never be "hot", that indicates to me that you have uncommanded coolant flow which needs testing as above.
