I Got Mine from Ford's but you will find halfords do one also, made by autoleads, I think the ford one is a better shape and feels of a higher quality.

Then all you need to do is prime it with proper plastic etching primer, then paint it using "Rover platinum silver" its a pretty good match for the dash. Then clear laquer it, I have recently done mine and I also done the surround silver on my kenwood mask unit and it really looks the biz tongue.gif

Hope this helps

Cheers Glyn

Oh and its really easy to fit

I tried the autoleads one, and have found that it's REALLY not worth bothering!!

There are several problems with the Autoleads one -

wrong colour (this i think applies to all types available even direct from Ford - i sprayed mine with Plasti-kote 621/451 silver spray, and the colour match was virtually perfect tho smile.gif )

The fitting is in NO-WAY secure - the panel itself is quite tight to fit (indeed i managed despite using upmost care, to snap one of the lugs off)however IF there is an internal bracket involved (a la most stereo's nowadays) it fouls the sliding attachment to the car.

Since you can't really use the internal bracket, the stereo doesn't sit properly in the hole, and to be honest doesn't attach to the car at all, it's possibly the WORST type i've seen.

However, i'm hoping someone replies to prove me wrong. I've ordered the proper Ford part now, so fingers crossed this one will work a lot better smile.gif

The ford part is Much Superior to any aftermarket one, Its strong and has a steel back to it, the a/market one i had was all plastic and broke easily.
The only downside is that you have to paint the ford part to match, but this is a small price to pay smile.gif

Well just picked it up, and it's virtually identical to the Autoleads one - appart from the fact that it's a lot better in the "Sturdy" department.

Fitting it later (needs a spray first as it's black) and will report back.

well, i also had both types, and unless ford have changed the design of theirs , it should be metal at the back of the adapter rather then just plastic for the autoleads one. ????

Indeed it is it's got a metal rear and sides. Have checked the fitting of the bracket for the stereo, and it's spot on smile.gif

It's just in the Primer/spraying stage now.

Word of warning to others - DON'T use any of the plasticote primer on these - they do not adhere to the base plastic. Currently using Standard Vauxhall car primer (Left over from a previous motor) and it seems to be working a treat smile.gif

Ahh, that explains why the instrument pods and my grill now resemble aligator skin. Silver with laquer top coat....

Thanks :-)

!!!!

Saying this, the plasticoate middle layer (Metalic 621/451) seems to give a great finish - it just needs some acrylic top coat and it should be fine (if it bubbles the metalic paint i'm gonna go mental at em!!)

Well things went ok. The plasticoate acrillyic top spray decided to make the whole finish go darker, so oversprayed with the main colour and left at that.

Installation was a breeze - the surround just clips into place, and the standard DIN stereo metal "surround" slots (allbeit a little tightly!) into the hole destined for it smile.gif Stereo plugs straight in, and all works a treat.

Changed the rear speakers to 6x9's whilst i was in the mood, and who whole think makes a good noise. Just need to get replacement 5"s for the front now smile.gif

To those thinking about going for one of the immitations - don't bother. Just go for the original ford conversion plates - yes it was about £15 plus the Vat, but well worth it over the 3rd party ones smile.gif

Oh and i found the guide on the yahoo group invaluble. I'll have a look in the FAQ's section, and if not there i'll post it there for anyone else looking to do the same mod.

my stereo adapter, It's a proper ford one painted in the rover platinum silver, while I was at it I painted the surround of my kenwood mask system, when you turn the ign off the front plate spins round on a motor and with the surround silver looks like theres no stereo in the car

Hi Paul,

I think your would be lucky to find one now, they stopped making them about 2 years ago, but if you fancy one it's a kenwood KMD PS970R and it comes with 3 pre outs, full remote control, quite a high spec, but was about £500 at the time  but as things have moved on I dont suppose you would pay half that for a similair spec one now
