I have just got a puma 1.7, and I am enjoying the drive alot. My initial thought is that the braking performance doesn't live up to the handling and the engine performance.

Has anyone upgraded the braking system to discs on the rear?

This will not help with the actual problem which is undersized FRONT brakes. Unless you want to do handbrake turns

The long term solution is to upgrade front brakes to post 2000 spec or fit front brakes off a Focus ST170. You can go further but this depends on budget and your driving style.

Quick search on 'brakes' on this forum should throw up loads of useful info.

Many useful comments on the site.

I am now considering an upgrade to pst 2000 front discs.

Does anyone have eny experience of the cosworth kit offered by puma speed. Is it worth the extra £150

Any comments on the post 2000 /cosworth upgrade would be apreciated.

i think that the st170 set up that pumaspeed offer for the front is well worth it and is also perfect for the puma, taking into account the weight power ratios ect! the cossie kits i believe are good but ive never been in a car that has them fitted, i have fealt the 280mm and st170 upgrades and they are ample stopping power for the puma!

as of tommorrow i will have a rear disc set up avaliable if your interested!!!!???? ;-)

I would have thought brakes for a heavyish 4wd 220bhp car would be overkill for a light 2wd 123bhp one...but if you got the cash... ja_stupid.gif

Remember you may still be running 195 width tyres with only so much grip is available...can't help thinking save you cash for other bits like poly bushes etc...

Go with the 170 set up if funds permit they are a very good setup and wont be as old as the Cossy brakes.
Rear disc brakes will help slightly with braking but you will benifit more with the fronts

My front brakes are now almost on the point of being non-existent so was thinking I would use the opportunity to upgrade to the post 2000 spec. Is it worth upgrading the rear brakes to the post 2000 spec as well?
Also how much is it for the ST170 setup?

I've had the st170 front brake set up for about a year now and highly recommend it.

However it also depends on your current wheel size as I believe that they don't fit behind the 15" wheels.
Now HiD ready. Are you ready for the switch over?

Reflection is nothing without depth.

i cont think they fit behind 15" wheels either!

i know have the st170 fronts and they are great i have to say! they stop the car now anyway! i also have the rears off a 2.0 focus ghia which made a difference when they were on with the standards were on aswell, they feel good aswell!

If you don't have 17" wheels got the 2000 spec upgrade with decent pads (Mintex 1144's...) otherwise go for the blingist possible smile.gif

I had the post 2000 spec discs done at Pumaspeed, with red dot pads about 12 months ago. They are excellent and it does make a big difference.
I drive fast whenever possible and struggle to get them to fade.
Wouldnt say you need anything more unless youre doing track days.
I have also read that really big discs can actually decrease brake performance due to the extra weight. Sounds stupid but because the discs are revolving at high speed the centrifugal force exponentially increases their mass or summat. Although this may well be b*ll*x.

There was a really handy item in the Performance Ford magazine (November issue?) about fitting new brakes (can't remember off hand which set up they reccommended) to the Puma. They actually used Alan Pumabuild's mother's car to do the brake mods on. It really tempted me....
