I bought my car a few weeks ago, a 2001 1.6 with 32k, and am planning it's (probably) first cambelt change shortly. I'm not sure whether to bother replacing the water pump at this interval given the low mileage and general good running, what do you guys think?

I had the alternator belt off today to see if I could check the condition of the cambelt but it was more difficult than I thought so I had to stop but the water pump seemed to be spinning freely by hand.

It is 10 years or 100k miles for your 1.6 which ever occurs first so it should have already been done once (check the paper work you might have got with it, though if in doubt assume not changed perhaps).
I changed my water pump because I decided it was old enough but not everyone changes the water pump but the cars are getting old now.

I didn't get anything with the the car to suggest it's been done so have to play safe I think. The aux belt is shafted, cracks all over it, so I don't think they'd have done a cambelt change without doing that. This car's had very little servicing I think.

I'd do the water pump as your already in the area and it's easier to do with the belt out of the way.

Yes, I ordered a new pump in the end and a rocker cover gasket so will be doing the whole lot for peace of mind.

While the cooling system is drained a new thermostat is also a good idea.

Just ordered a Gates thermostat. Looks like it's gonna be another big month wallet wise.

Could fit a new Ford Heater Control Valve as well.

As it happens the previous owner told me that the HCV had already been replaced so I'm happy to leave that one.
