Hello everyone,

My Girlfriends 1,7 Puma has just broken! mellow.gif
Its the water pump , the bearings have gone so of course it needs replacing. It also needs a cambelt, (77000k on the clock) Commen sense suggests that it should be done at the same time as the water pump there by saving money on labour charges. Given that said, does anyone know what would be the time it would take to fit a new water pump and cambelt and what the cost of the items would be. I hate garages and hete to be ripped off so any help would be appreciated. I live in Fareham, Hampshire if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Cheers , Mickster.

Cambelt change is a major job & should be left to an expert.
The 1.7 VCT engine has a 2 cams, 1 which is a 'floating' cam and only kicks in when the car is doing 3000 revs per min or more.
I was told that the 'floating' cam needs to be set into the correct position and the stretch bolt & auto tensioner has to be changed at the same time. (hence the complexity)

if you have a local ford specialist (which is not a main dealer) that will be your best bet.

Try and budget for £200-£300 just for the cam belt change/service

Cheers

Hi. We had the cambelt changed and a service in 2005. The water pump was found to be leaking and changed at the same time. It was all done in a day by Pumabuild, but they are in Birmingham.

Yes i read about Pumabuild but if i may be so bold, what was the bill for the work, excluding the service of course.
Thanks.

I recently had my cambelt and water pump done at the same time. I had to get the pump done as it was (i hope!!) the cause of my Kat randomly deciding to spit all its coolant out!

The dealer I just bought the car off paid for the pump and the labor and I paid for the cambelt kit and a bit of the labor time needed. All in all, for a cambelt change it cost me about £130, about half what I would have expected to pay normally. So, I reckon its a good call to get it all done at the same time. If it needs doing it doesnt make sense to re-fit the old cambelt.

Perhaps a trip to Tremona, Southampton?

Tremona Garage in Southampton will change your cambelt using Ford parts, including Tensioner, stretch bolt etc.
While your at it fit a new auxillary belt as well, it has to be removed to change the cambelt.
Tremona also has a cam locking tool, some garages do not - it is required to make sure the cams do not slip = bad news.
Details in the link below, when you ring then ask for Richard.
I trust them with my Kat. good.gif

When I had my cambelt done at Ford, the service desk guy said it takes the best part of three hours to do (he looked up the labour time on their system). They needed the car for the day though to allow time for the engine to completely cool down. So at £60 per hour plus £90ish for the cambelt kit that's £270 total.

If changing water pump and aux belt as well, add in the time it takes to drain/refill/bleed cooling system and change water pump (I'm guessing 1 hour, changing the coolant doesn't take long), cost of water pump (?), cost of aux belt (£20) and cost of new coolant (£8).

I had cambelt done in december 2005 at a cost of £250 ish.

9 months later they told me that it needed a new water pump at it was starting to seep. So had that done at £260ish.

To this day I still don't know whether it needed doing at the same time as the cambelt. Maybe, maybe not. But if the pump was only starting to leak slightly then maybe not. But hey, it was all done at Frauds so you never know.

My local ford dealer has quoted me £299 to just change the cam belt on my puma (1.7), but instead I've manage to get a friend of a friend, who's a ford mechanic, to do it for £180.

Apparently the parts cost £90 (geniune ford parts) and a cam locking tool is needed for the 1.7's.

I had a major service, water pump, cam belt, aux belt and brakes fitted at for for £625 at a Ford dealer.

Service was circa £190, Cambelt £250, Aux Belt £25 and brakes £45 - which leaves about £115 for the water pump - but it did save on labour having it done at the same time as the Cam Belt.
The joy you get when stepping into the puma is like the feeling you got at school when the TV was wheeled into the classroom!

If you've changed the aux belt and tensioners, the belt is tighter than it was before the change. The old, worn waterpump is suddenly put under greater tension again, and can fail after a couple of months.

That would explain it then. Interesting. Thanks for that
