Hopefully it was the two classic errors. The breather was pointing to the engine and the mechanic had filled the gearbox up to the filler hole. Now corrected and oil cleaned off. Will keep an eye on it for a week or so just to make sure that the problem is solved.

HI! I have the same problem like you and I want to ask you something! You say that the mechanic had filled the gearbox up to the filler hole. I make the same and now I have same problem!
How many gearbox oil is needed?

Gearbox should not be filled right up to the hole, it should have I think from memory a level 5-10mm below that filler hole.

I was always told to fill until it comes out of the filler hole

NO !! Not in the Puma - fill to just below the hole. I believe my mechanic used the short end of an Allen Key in the hole to judge the level. After he changed the breather to the correct position, with the arrow pointing to the front of the car, and adjusted the gearbox oil level we have had no further problem.
