well have just got back from a great week in the lake district. but one day we decided to go on a drive on some of the passes they have up there (winlatter and honistor) well on the way up honistor pass the car nearly over heated but cooled it self down. but after about an hour of driving after the pass we where going up a hill and i looked down to see the needle was almost in the red so i pulled over lifted the bonnet and cooled down almost instantly so we carried on with out a problem. on the way back today i noticed that when i was on the motorway if i put the heating on full wack the temp would drop off dramatically it did this for an hour or so but for the last 3 hours sad steady in the middle. any thing to worry about or should i just keep an eye on it>

Has a new heater control valve been fitted to the car in the last few months?

It might be worth reading this thread (and the links therein)...

My temp gauge (and that on my friend's Puma) has always sat in the middle but I have never gone above that. Does your's normally sit lower than that?

A few ideas here (in case you missed 'em).

The fact that the heater temperature makes so much difference to to engine temperature makes me suspicious of the heater control valve.

Another thing that seems a bit funny is that it cooled down almost immediately when you pulled over. There is a slim possibility that the engine's not overheating at all, and that it's the temperature sender or temperature gauge that's faulty, but I wouldn't assume this just because you can't find any other cause. Engine overheating is a serious issue that needs to be sorted as soon as possible to avoid potentially expensive damage.

sounds like youve either got an airlock or your thermostat is about dead! id change the thermostat anyway, its a fiver and a couple of hours at a chilled 'its sunday & im in no rush' rate. could save you needing a new engine almost if it overheats, reckon youve got 2 weeks, thats how long mine took from being mardy to proper throwing the teddy out the pram!

make sure you use a ford themostat - other makes dont come with a thick enough seal

if the garage argues walk out, go to ford, buy one (fiver!) & go back, in fact go to ford & buy one first!

the other ones are naff & changing it twice aint fun, bin there!!
