What do you want to achieve, top end or acceleration
1.4 5th 0.76-1 final 4.19-1
1.7 5th 0.88-1 final 3.82-1
Fiesta 1.6 Zetec se (2001) 5th 0.76-1 final 4.25-1
The fifth gears are part of the input shaft and are in matched sets (so Ford say!) I have looked at the Fiesta box 4.25-1 with a 0.88 final drive swap.

The 1.7 box I took apart had 1st to 5th as follows- 3.15, 1.92, 1.44, 1.07, 0.88
not sure of the 1.4 ratios 1 to 4

Fiesta ST 3.58, 2.04, 1.41, 1.11, 0.88, 3.82 fd

When you find youre ratios then use this calculator to get an idea

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a 1.4 box final drive might help with my quest to make 5th gear work better.

Im assuming the bits are interchangeable with 1.7 box ?

Cheers

I Think both the gearboxies are IB5's so most of the parts should be interchangeable but i don't know as i haven't tryed it.

does this mean that a 1.7 with a 1.4 box would have slightly better acceleration? iplease excuse if this is a dumb question i dont understand ratios lol

just wondering when i read that there, would it be possible to take the 5th gear out of a 1.7box and put it into a 1.4box?

Yes I believe so.

The FRP box is a 1.7 box with a final drive from a 1.6 box, then shotpeened 1st and 2nd (from what I've read).

Seeing as they are all IB5 boxs the contents should be interchangable. Even the ST gears should fit in the 1.2-1.7 boxes.

Ford say that the input shaft and 5th gear are machined as a pair so you cant just take the cog off the end and swap that, also, some of the parts are NLA for that gearbox.
I was looking at doing that for mine but going down a different route now. Ideally I want a quaife straight cut gearset with 5-1 final drive.
I wish I hadnt sold the 4.7-1 cwp set I had a few years back because that would get quite close to my target.

Anyone know which vehicle with a IB5 box has the shortest CWP, by which I mean the one that'd give you the best acceleration (in case what I really mean is the tallest)Something diesel Im guessing.

Diesels are usually quite long, to keep the revs down. I think you probably want a 1.25 Fiesta setup.
2005 Vauxhall VX220 Turbo
2000 Ford Focus 1.6i Ghia
2006 Renault Clio 2.0i RenaultSport 197 - SOLD
2005 Honda CR-V 2.0i Executive auto
2001 Ford Puma 1.7i Black

Fiesta 1.6 Zetec SE 2001 4.25-1 cwp
If you have the money then Quaife do a 5-1 cwp straight cut final drive (may do other ratios also)

searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale
