Hello all you Puma enthusiasts. My beloved 2000 Black is really not well. She is in need of a new cylinder head gasket with all the additional work this requires. Now she has developed a new noise which comes in at just below 2000 revs and disappears again at 2200 revs. it only happens when the car is driven . No noise when stationary. My local mechanics are baffled. Has anyone got any ideas. The noise sounds very similar to the sound you hear when the ABS is doing its self test at around 12 mph. Help.

Has it recently run out of oil or coolant?

No, it hasn't, but it does have an oil leak, probably from the head gasket and maybe from the camshaft seal too. I had arranged to have this work done next week and then this new noise developed, which neither of my mechanics can explain. My head is telling me to part with the car and get something newer, but my heart is saying....... If I go ahead with the oil leak repairs which are going to cost a minimum of £600, maybe more if the head needs skimming, and then this noise is still there I shall be kicking myself. I've had the car since 2004 and the only major expense has been a new clutch in 2007. It's a low-miler at 63k. Many thanks for any suggestions as to what the problem is.

The oil leak could be the rocker cover gasket like £150 to fix or diy it. Head gasket is not common at all but rocker cover gasket is.

Why do you think head gasket or is it that you are being told head gasket?
When did you last change the cam belt?
