Hi folk, my mate took her car to a Ford garage, and they want £265 to replace the alternator.

Does this sound right? It'll cost me £80 + V.A.T to buy an alternator for her car, but how easy is the job of replacing it?

Is it simply removing the bolts and taking the old one off, removing fan belt etc?

I'm not a mechanic, but if this is like 1 or 2 stars in the haynes manual I wouldn't have thought I'd struggle too much.

I've got a metric socket set.

i removed my alternator to check to see if the internals were ok and i had no problems in refitting it , and i'm not a mechanic either.
first thing to do is open the fan belt pre-tensioner pulley located at the bottom , easier to see from under the car. opened the bolts , reomved the battery feed and charging light cable. took a couple of hours, no bother.
make sure you don't over tighten the fan belt when you replace it.
