Put a deposit down on a FRP aint drove it yet

http://www.tempestforcars.co.uk/view.asp?ID=10352

I have a civic type r at the mo and some jelous chav smashed it so insurance is ridiculous so need something cheaper like the frp where the insurance is half!!

Do i buy one or not i love rallying and the image of it is awesome i appreciate it wont be as fast as my civic but are they good to drive and worth the money?? oh and is the reliability any good as my honda was bullet proof!!

How quick are they in the real world??

And what good mods can you do??

Cheers

hmmm wanna watch out there - they're quoting 123bhp........ me thinks they don't know what it really is.....

And an adjustable steering column? that'll be a 1st on a Puma.............

It'll go round corners like you'll never believe. Not mental in a straight line, but if you want that - get a corvette.....

Think you'd best have a word with an FRP owner about running costs.....

Brake service anyone?

have you read about frps at all??

if you think they are cheap to run and maintain then think again .

yes some people go a year without much trouble but when things do go wrong its an expensive car to fix.

a brake overhaul will set you back over 1k if you needed new disks, calipers etc. look here Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_47_179" target="_blank">Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default...cPath=43_47_179" target="_blank">http://www.Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default...cPath=43_47_179

the oem exhaust system will set you back alot when needing a change - manifold is £400, centre section is £461 and the back box is £ 210. Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_119" target="_blank">Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_119" target="_blank">http://www.Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_119

the body panels you dont even want to know how much they are but put it this way if you have a ding then you are looking at £900 for a wing in primer then painting and fitting so about £1300 for a replacement and there isnt an abundance of them . looky here Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_178" target="_blank">Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_178" target="_blank">http://www.Pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/default.php?cPath=43_178

frps can be very reliable but the nature of the car means they are driven harder and i reckon you will like to drive it hard/corner hard etc as you love the type r for its speed/handling etc. so this means the parts have more stresses and will brake quicker.

the calipers have no dust seals on them and need a proper service once a year which includes pistons fully out etc and spare parts for th calipers are not cheap and pads are £110. each of the 8 pistons are over £35 each too.

also sensors etc seem to die quicker in the frp, especially the hego sensor.

but saying all that the frp is by far the best handling and most fun car i have driven and i wouldnt change it for the world, so go for it but i wouldnt expect it too be as reliable as the type r .

i love the look of them but are they worth all these running costs?

They sound similar to type r to run then

but what you got to remember is the insurance is £1500 a year for me not £3000

only one answer to your questions.

go drive that one and see what you feel.

but id place my bets that you will come back with a smile on your face and i bet the type r doesnt pop and crackle on overrun when you lift off the accelerator wink.gif wink.gif

Please elaborate?

Quite often people confuse running costs with buying ICE, spoilers, turbos, lambo doors, collecting stuff at Halfords like a magnet etc...

Running costs are insurance, petrol, routine servicing/parts and depreciation.

Personally I think you'll find the FRP gutless after your CTR, no more traffic light grand prix wink.gif

I've run mine over some 24,000 miles in two years.

I'd estimate my maintenance spend in that time to have been around £2,000 including the regular servicing, cambelt replacement and the stuff that broke / wore out.

Say 8p / mile? Meanwhile depreciation has probably been 4p / mile. Compare with somebody buying a Focus ST new and running it for 12,000 miles probably picks up depreciation at 25p / mile.

I don't call the FRP costs crippling, by any means.

The thing is you do never know if / when a big bill is going to creep up and bite you, so you need to be able to afford it, if it happens. But it won't necessarily happen particularly if you keep on top of regular maintenance.

But then an FRP is considerably older than a Focus ST, so it's not quite a comparison is it...........

ja_stupid.gif

The low depreciation of the FRP means that the actual cost of ownership is considerably less than a buying a current Focus which lots of people do without thinking "Oh my Lord, can I afford to own it.?"

I suspect most readers here may have been able to figure out that an FRP is older than a Focus ST for themselves, but thanks for pointing it out anyway.
