Hey people

Some of you may know that Ive had a problem with my FRP recently. The mechanic is stripping the gearbox apart tomorrow, as he thinks the diff has gone. Incase its a complete write off, who much is a new FRP geaerbox?

Thanks

on the Pumabuild site - a standard FRP gearbox is £705 & the LSD version is £764 - you might be able to get it cheaper by shopping around a bit i suppose. if you dont already have LSD - probably a good time to get it , as the difference in cost with / without is minimal - regards

Ah right, I was expecting them to be much more than that.

I think I'll just buy a brand new one then, as the labour costs involved with stripping it down, will probably come close to the cost of a new one. At least youve got a brand new one then.

Whatever it costs, its got to be done. Shame really, as I wanted to sell it. Cant believe the day after I made the decision to sell, the FRP just went on my like that. Not happy at all.

Will get a sub-total of the labour costs tomorrow, then weigh up if its more sensible to just buy a new box. Damn it, bloody pissed off.

Might be sounding a little off.....and people may totally be off with my reply... but if your selling surely u would consider putting a standard second hand box in it from a normal puma? and possibly just getting the uprated parts of ya old box in the other box with decent diff?

just my thinking, or even just bolt up a standard box, not many people will be non the wiser. safes you a great deal of money.

Nah, not doing that. Its immoral. Also I wouldnt like it done to me personally, and if I were to declare it in the advert, it would lower th eprice considerably.

totally agree, some idiot has welded a standard 1.7 exhaust to my FRP one, thus resulting in a bidge, and a bill to me of about £800!

I'd be really annoyed if someone had put the wrong gearbox on an FRP! ohmy.gif

Well, it looks like its going to be a brand new FRP box, with viscous LSD, and an Helix uprated clutch, seeing as its exposed right now. Non instock at Ford, and Pumabuild are having a look, and will phone back tomorrow. Im going to keep my FRP box, and strip it myself. See whats up with it, then sell it in the future.

When I thought my diff had gone I had it taken off and sent away to a gearbox specialist. Cost 150quid to be stripped down and re-built with new seals and bearings etc. I asked puma-build about it first and they said they had second hand FRP 'boxes on the shelf that they could sell to me for £400 + fitting. Glad I didn't do this in the end.

Instead, while the box was being rebuilt I had an uprated RS turbo diff put in which is stronger than the standard FRP viscous LSD and more resilient than the equivelant Quaiffe ATB diff. It makes a massive difference when driving it hard around bends, you can really feel it.

The box also feels like new now. So tight and gear changes are so positive. Cost just short of 900quid all in I think, but definitelty worth it for the purposes the car is used for. If you have to get a new box/ have yours re-built i'd suggest definitely goin with the LSD option......

Anyone know the differences between the Quaife ATB, and Ford LSD?

they work diffently. The Viscous diff can be a little slow in reaction as it relies on fluid moving, after reading a good article in FF on Diffs, sorry I don't have it to hand to give you the technical take. If you like the Diff in your FRS then fit a Quaife smile.gif
there was an interesting post a while back on clutches and alternatives to the Helix

though it may be eaiser to sell iwth the FRP LSD box plus insurance

Are we talking milliseconds slower, or is it a noticeable duration?

I like the Quaife in the FRS, it really gets the most from the road surface. Also, does the Helix clutch offer a good bite, plus durability? If there are better clutches, for the £300 mark, please let me know! Thanks!

Yes the Quaiffe diff isn't viscous so works differently. As HappyKat said, the article in last months FastFord tested one on a Focus ST which explained it all if you can get hold of one. I don't have it either i'm afraid lol. I have heard they are a good diff, but my uprated RS turbo diff is apparently more durable than the Quaiffe alternative as well as stronger.

I have a Helix clutch on mine and although a little stiff on the left leg, does offer a decent bite if needed. I didn't know it was there until the 'box was taken out! Seems very strong too.

Well, now on order are

- FRP Front splitter
- New FRP Gearbox with viscous LSD
- Helix uprated clutch
- Outer CV joint

Looking forward to getting my Farps back now! This clown today was "showing off" his MG TF, whilst I was driving in front of him in the Delta, at how good it was at "darting" and changing direction quickly. I laughed to myself and was like "nah my friend, FRPs know how to really do it"

Cant wait to get it back!
