I blitzed it! Despite carrying a good 50kg of luggage in the back and a passenger, I got this........

It was slow and boring but I proved the theory to myself. I don't think I'll bother again though.
The fuel light came on just as I pulled into the filling station, I filled it up to the top again, just as I had done in the morning. I put 35.68 litres in, that's 7.85 gallons, giving me 54.42 mpg. I can't tell you how impressed I am with this car right now!

you must have filled it on a slight 'up' gradient... or just stopped at the click... you can get much more than 35 in there...

i have had up to 42ltr fills.... smile.gif

Impressive results tho... ja_cool.gif

the car wasn't empty when i filled it, the fuel light had literally only just come on so there would have been a good few litres still in there. and it was filled right to the little metal cap inside the filler, exactly as it was when i started.

I bet they were well chuffed with you making their journey so dull - what average speed did you manage ?

i left about 0715 hrs, arrived in edinburgh about 1600 hrs.... so that's about 45 mph. we did stop once though, for about an hour so that'd be about 52 mph.... it was horribly slow. i was mightily impressed by the economy but it's probably not something i'll ever do again.

Top effort - especially when the roads in the Borders beg to be driven! It's handy to know that it can be done however I think many cars driven with this sort of discipline would return good mpg. I'm getting approx 340 from a tank with mixed driving and mainly ensuring that I get in a high gear wherever poss without the car struggling and I'm more than happy with that return.

i'm trying this at the mo, first day I travelled smoothly and the needle just passed the first line after about 30miles, next day I did another 65 miles and the needles just passed quarter mark, there were some slightly more urban trips in day 2 though. I think if i'm careful I can still do it, or come close at least. You did mega good there thoguh mate!

what roads did you do it on, and what was your "technique"?

Back in 2000, when my Puma was about 10 months old, we went on holiday to France and did about 2000 miles.
I can't remember how much fuel I used, but I can remember working out the mpg, and I was highly impressed.......it was 50.5mpg!
Mind you, I didn't go above 65mph.
I'm quite sure I haven't got anywhere near that kind of mpg since! tongue.gif

Is that 30 miles by the first quarter from full!!?? The fuel indicator drops in bursts I find however I'm normally on close to 100 miles by the first quarter and on 180miles by half a tank. I'm not pottering about either but stick to 70mph on the motorway between my journey from Leeds to Wakefield. I'm on 4th gear about 40mph and above the car can take 5th with urban motoring. Blimey what a sad state of affairs when a car like this needs to be razzed.... rolleyes.gif

very impressive!

I have had 50 mpg on a long run, but never more - I think I would prefer a quicker, if less economical journey!

edited because I cannot spell!

No I mean the first line. The needle goes past full if ya take my meaning? By a quarter of a tank down it was about 94, then today well............... I gave up it was too nice to be pottering about wink.gif . However just under half a tank down the clock's saying 163 miles so i'm still gonna be well in excess of the 300 mark!

Don't be so sure. I generally get 150-170miles to the half-way mark, average about 260 to a tank
