Anyone read the reviews of the new Toyota (Subaru) GT86 and thought this is finally the replacement for the FRP.

A deliberately low powered (197 bhp), light weight, two door coupe that puts main stream driving excitement ahead of horse power, track antics and computer control.

There have been many hot hatches over the years, that have been brilliant, but to me don't seem to have been created in the same vain..

How about a Lotus Elise or a derivative such as the Exige ?

The new engine which is going into the Fiesta is a 1.6 Eco Boost and isn't in a Volvo and probably never will.

The 1.6 Eco Boost had just come out in the Zetec S level trim of the new Focus.

it's the same that's awailable in the mondeo, isn't it? and that is awailable as a 150 hp and 180 hp version in some volvo's asvel, it's a ford engien, but volvo use it aswel. same as the 2l in the new focus st, is the same as the 2.0T (200hp) and T5 (250hp) volvo engiens,

unless this is a brand new one, I'm pretty shure it's the same engien :) I know there is a new engien coming, the 3 cyl 1L turbo 120 hp ecobost :) should be interesting :)

If you ignore the lack of a coupe body, I'd say the RenaultSport Clio 200 Cup.

I had this exact same epiphany today.

@Michael - all the reviews of the GT86 seem to suggest it's more fun than a Scirocco.

@Neil - the reviews also say it drives on par with the Clio

I'd go out on a limb and say there isn't one.

A Fiesta RS with an N/A engine would have been my ideal car. Properly set up suspension wise and a decent dose of power. Sadly that is not going to happen. If the RS does come it will of course be turbocharged.

Successor to the FRP... nothing.

Joking apart, Clio 197/200 does tick a lot of the boxes;

  • High reving naturally aspirated engine - check
  • Bespoke bodywork - check
  • Unique suspension - check
  • Excellent handling - check
  • Four pot brakes - check

But IMO they aren't especially durable. I loved having mine, but now that I have to pay for labour, I wouldn't really want one outside the warranty period.

Not seeing many coupes here, though I know the FRP is really a Fiesta...

The Lotus is too exotic.

The VW is too ordinary - though good to look at.

Maybe the FRP is unique - the rest look like typical corporate efforts.

The FRP has that 2 men in shed with a large stack of performance parts catalogues, and some evil ideas.

But a poor grasp of budgets as they'd packed the shopper with so many goodies they'd have to sell a 1000 of them at a price you'd baulk at even today and they never got around to replacing the god awful steering wheel...

The Subaru or (U R A BUS) was going to be the new Toyota Celica with" 2ltr 04 spec flat 4 engine", no turbo. It's a good unit will run for ever, but just like a 911 it will someday put you guts in the toilet and send you to A & E. I got a WXR for the good lady, she thinks is brill as long as the petrol fairy fills the tank.Wicked fun but going around bends at speed but it has its limits. VW it German, they wanted to build the FRP and played some part in its demise, the gemans say you can get to Warsaw in one tank? Come on. Look at the mark 7 fiesta. We have the same lines down the side. If ford take 2" of the roof height and the roof width the lines will make the Ύ side window look like the classic Capri / puma, even with a modern sharp style. And if they add around 12 to 14" backward of the rearwheel arch the side lines would stream nicely in to the stubby boot lid and sweeping back window. Ford Europe has just to tell their German masters to "go fish" and model one. The new fiesta is currently one of the best cars for holding its price. In these times nobody wants well can aford to spend money on 24K on a new VW, Subaru's, or Mini etc.unless its on the never never, People want small cool but most of all affordable. A Ford able being the operative word…? Will they ever give us a new one, or will it just be a one hit wonder.

If the lotus is too exotic how about a VX220 Turbo? Loads of power and from an engine that's as common as muck.

Yes the Elise's better looking brother!

Cartman is right, I've got one in the garage, and although it goes like stink and handles like an exotic, the engine is sooo boring - give me the FRP any day, the noise, the revs, the noise, the heater that works, the demisting windscreen, (no you don't get either with the VX!) the plug and play abilities...

PS Being able to get into a car also helps - got to admit I struggle with the VX

Turbo's? Rear wheel drive? Surely the spiritual successor has to be a small lightweight, coupé, front wheel drive, great handling, revvy NA engine?

had a brain wawe the other day.... a fitting replacement (in my mind) to the frp could be an Alfa Rome 147 the 2 L puts out 150 hp, whit the availabilety of the same F1 gearing system that is on the ferarri 355F1 It's a smal lightis fwd sport cupe/hatch thingi :) and It's an alfa, so you know your instantly cool when you own one :)

been trying to convince the wife to let me buy "her" one but she always finds some kind of excuse not to...

Yust a thought :)

although not as cheep as a normal one, the GTA has a 250 hp 3.2 L V6 :)
