Hi all

just wondered if anyone on here as fitted a towbar to a Puma & I know all about the legal stuff after reading some posts on google .. I've seen some for sale @ around £160 or so(don't want to pay so much) but seen a fiesta mk3

for sale for £30 will this fit ? I can do some light mods if needed its just to carry a couple of bikes don't want a roof rack etc

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks Geoff.

In the wiki is an article on the exact and only Puma that a tow bar can be fitted to which is very unlikely to be any still on the road today. The Puma in general was never type approved for towing. Could make it difficult to get insurance.

Type approval only came in on post 1998 I think or 1996, either way the best bet if you want to carry bikes is on the roof as if you have an accident even without a trailer attached your insurance will be void via the police!
Send me your number as I too want to carry bikes on my puma but won't fit a roof rack or tow bar but have a solution

Sorry to also add that the rear glass tailgate is not load bearing for bikes either, it's the curvature.

No frame either so you can't hook the straps in without it touching the glass.

The solution is a a tow bar flange with the frame attached like so -

This one nicer looking but more money, also need to check whether you could bolt to the flange on the bar directly or whether that clips on to the ball - consider that when you buy as you won't have a ball.

If you had no ball present I can't see that there would be any legal problem, you are in essence installing bike carrying hardware in the same way you would do on any other car and most insurers won't ask to be notified about that.

Thanks to you all but I already have the bike frame which fits where the tow ball goes, just wondered if a fiesta mk 3 tow bar would fit ???? of course I would remove the towbar ball when not using it..

Thanks again.. Geoff

I would guess you'll be OK but it might be a £30 gamble.

Tow bar will still be worth some money even if it doesn't fit though so you're not completely out of pocket to try.
