just bought this headunit today and everytime i connect the cable to my ipod, the headunit comes up with a usb error message. my ipod is fully updated with the latest software. my ipod is the ipod 30gb video umm 5gen not the newest one. any ideas why this is happening? do i need to buy the full speed cable? because if i do im going to take it back because ive just spent 260pounds on it and i dont fancy paying another 15-20pounds to get my ipod to work which i was told will work with the usb cable i already have.

cheers

You need to use the Full Speed USB cable- the one that connects to the rear USB socket of the head unit and is secured by a thumb screw.

Have you tried reseting the iPod by holding down the centre button and menu button for a few seconds?

Bit of a rip off price you paid- I got mine for £225 nearly a year ago... dry.gif

i had no cables in the box i would have noticed one witha thumb screw, the cable i have is the one that came with the ipod offical apple usb cable. i was told this would work beens my ipod is 5th gen. if i cant get it to work will someone direct me to the cable i need please

yeah i wanted to buy the x001 which was £200 but they sold the last one and beens i won £80 on a lotto scratchcard i thought id pay an extra £60 and get the newer version, was from halfords so yeah ripped off a little but it was money on won :-P

(edit) still no luck with getting it to work. still using the offical cable, restarted ipod twice and still get the usb error display. i just read the cd manual and it says if itunes and ipod software is later then 7.4.3.1 ipod my not fuction properly

should i roll back and see if this helps? all suggestions welcome

The original White Apple cable will NOT work.

I would go back to the shop and kick up a fuss and demand the proper Alpine full speed USB cable which is black, if they won't give you this you are well within your rights to have your money refunded.

Be aware there is also an Alpine high speed cable with a round socket on one end, again this is not the correct one for your iPod 5G.

I got mine from extreme audio, no problems.

ok went back to halfords today they phoned alpine for me and let me speak to them, the guy from alpine told me it will work with the white cable and its my ipod at fault. he said update itunes to version 8 ( i alerady had this) and update my firmware, mine is 1.3 because thats the highest the 5g goes, but he said ipods are on 2.1 and im at fault and if it dont work get halfords to order me the highspeed cable, not a usb and it will work

basicly alpine where puting the blame on me and ive not paid out this money to have some of the features not work and not have pure digital playback, refund is on the cards.

cheers for you help bok , but like you said there they will try to fob me off with a cable that isnt correct for my ipod

Just checked my X100 order and it came with the iPod 'High Speed' cable in the box. The 'Full Speed' cable was optional, for iPods older than the 5G (this cable operates slower and doesn't download album art AFAIK)

Check your paperwork/manuals to verify this.

Just had the same stereo fitted by Halfords yesterday with no poblems. the only thing extra I had to get was the facia and harness. the lot including fitting cost £240. It works really well with my iPod Touch 2. I think the highspeed iPod cable came with the unit.

Hope you get it sorted.

Mark.
