So Puma has just turned 20 years old with 160K on the clock.
Was giving her the usual underbody corrosion check this weekend and noticed the front of the engine block now sports some really dayglow, almost neon green fluid which covers the area just immediately to the right of the timing belt pulley assembly (facing the car), and runs down to the sump.
What's this from? The engine coolant is red, the washer fluid is light blue, the brake fluid is more or less clear, the power steering fluid is brown, and I know what colour the oil is
Only thing I can think of is maybe some air con fluid of some description? Doesn't look like it was splashed up or anything from the road.
Any ideas?

UV dye from the air con lubricant, should be a sealed system but the good news is the dye will normally be close to where it leaked.

Cheers. Ok, so it looks like its coating the front of the engine block from just below the alternator, running down to the sump. Is the drive for the a/c compressor located about there - is it driven from the timing belt?

Yes, AC compressor and the leak points will either be the pipe union on the right side towards the back of the pump or the pulley side by the belt.

Looks like its not the pipe union but the gasket / o-ring mid-pump (see below)
Is there a danger that it will run dry even though I'm not actually using the A/C then start to grind or fly apart? In other words, is this critical to the vehicle or can I wait a few weeks until I can get it replaced?

No danger if the AC is not engaged.
Might be worth cleaning that off and getting a more specific spot for the leakage.

I had cleaned it off and the image is what came back after a run of about 100 miles so its leaking even without the air con engaged.

There's a clutch arrangement on the pulley so either that is engaged or you have pressure in the system due to the temperature changes.

Mine was leaking at the housing of A/C compressor. Where the two halves meet, there is a big rubber O ring. It perished partially and the system was leaking there. Try to find the recondition kit for A/C compressor. The type of A/C compressor you are looking for is FS-10.

That's very helpful all - many thanks. I'll probably look at doing it now in Jan as its not stopping the car at the moment and I'll have more time to get the job done properly then.
