Thought i'd a share a few pictures from a car i'm working on this December..it's quite a nice FRP with low milage, just needing a bit of TLC to get it tiptop again.. I worked on this FRP a few years ago to do the brakes, so it's nice to see it back here again... B)

:cool:/>

Posted Image

First job was to remove the gearbox and lift the engine out..

Posted Image

Mark who owns this car has recently just purchased it and was concerned about the cambelt etc before giving it some beans, hence the engine service...

turns out (just like the last couple iv'e done) the timing belt was so poorly tensioned I just pulled it off with my fingers.. :nono:/> why are people getting this soo badly wrong... clearly people are 'swapping' the belt and thinking they've done the job ok... :head:/>

check out this picture below...

this is a similar picture on every frp iv'e seen so far...ie.. the exhaust manifold gasget is just not up to the job of sealing the FRP manifold... gas leakage is quite noticeable on all ports around the engine and gasget...it needs sealing!..

Posted Image

here you can see quite a bit of mess/oil etc around the oil pump/crank etc... hard to know for sure whether this is leaky crankshaft seal or muck that's been thrown up from the driveshafts... i'm presuming both I think...

Posted Image

here's the oil pump and crank seal...to be replaced..

Posted Image

Oil pump back on now..also new water pump...

back of engine cleaned up a bit too..and exhaust face cleaned up...

Posted Image

front cleaned up a bit also..along with new Breather box and oil separator..also new thermostat..all sealed back with Wurth..

Sump sections took a hell of a lot of cleaning up...getting the old sealant out the mating faces is a complete ball ache.. :head: :head:

Here they are back on..cleaned up with new bolts :bleh:

Posted Image

here you can see the exhaust cam is also weeping quite a bit..so replaced that also..

Posted Image

Posted Image

cam loosened off and re-tensioned - Bottom pulley installed with SPX tool :bleh:

Posted Image

here's the cam bar locked in place... really nice and clean inside here..looked like a new build..

Posted Image

new air charge temp sensor installed..

Posted Image

new NGK plugs..

Posted Image

rear crankshaft seal replaced..

Posted Image

engine pretty much complete now... just gona put the new Clutch on the flywheel, and then get cracking on the gearbox.. :good:

Posted Image

timing cover cleaned up..and idle pulley replaced also

Posted Image..

more to follow....

Really great to see work in progress pictures Chris.
Shows items I should be looking out for on mine.
searching is fruitful | I'm a sponge not a mechanic | please do try that if stuck with a Puma problem whilst waiting for a reply | For the Puma fan this read 'The Inside Story Book' is very nice to own sometimes still seen for sale

Only that I'm worried about the previous owners not having carried out the routine maintenance very well.

yes, there is that.. in some cases though, I find the ones that have had little done (like this one) can be the nicest ones to bring back to new again ...

Unfortunately my lack of knowledge (the shame - my dad spent half his life as a motor mechanic) means it could get costly very quickly for me.

Still, I'd rather have an FRP that needs money throwing at it, than not ever own one at all. Just need to figure out what to do about the two cars we already own, definitely don't need a third.

You're adding value to a car which isn't depreciating much anyway.

I can think of worse ways to lose money on cars.

an interesting point..

many Puma's are being sold out there with 'cambelt done' on the details.. but having the engine out to do a 'proper' job along with other associated work and pictures to prove makes it a very tidy car...doing the cambelt kit on it's own is a slightly pointless job in my opinion..

New LUK clutch fitted..

Posted Image

Posted Image

check out the release bearing..lol! still the original metal one full of muck and rust now..god knows how it was still holding a seal and working.. :lol:/>

Posted Image

on to the gearbox.. had to dismantle the whole lot to replace the selector spring and this little bugger which was also leaking all over the linkage etc..

Posted Image

Posted Image

what a faff to change, you have to unscrew the selector bar from inside and pull it through, bash out the old seal and press the new one in carefully... hope it seals..the bar is quite scratched from the much which has got in through the boot...

Posted Image

here is the bar re-installed with new boot...

Posted Image

casing back on, after 3 attempts at lining up the selector plate correctly and casing etc.. :head:/> :head:/> :head:/>

new 5th gear housing gasget and drive shaft oil seals

Posted Image

gearbox back on now... but has been a slow and arduous day... nothing seemed to go quick and smooth today... just lining up the bloody gearbox seemed to be a nightmare too...seemed a lot harder to locate than normal.. :head: :comp: :puke:

The end is in sight though... :D

Quite - as you also say - cambelt done and cambelt going to be reliable for the foreseeable future seem not to be synonymous.

Shocking how many 'did the belt myself before I fitted to a Fiesta and now it doesn't run' conversations on the Fiesta Facebook groups.

One word Chris - SUPERB!

I am so pleased with the work you've done on #224. Thanks again for everything and the text and pic updates. I'd happily recommend Chris to anyone.

Great to meet and deal with a true gent and very knowledgeable enthusiast in an age where a lot of companies only seem to want to do the bare minimum etc!

I'm sure #224 will be back to you later this year for some more tlc - bushes or brakes or both...

Mark
