Just as the title says really. What do FRP owners prefer to use: Regular (typically 95 RON) or Super Unleaded (97 or occasionally 99 RON), and where from?

In the UK we have a very good grade of petrol compared to some other counties, but wondered what the consensus on this is. Or, do you vary depending upon your mood? Do you prefer - Supermarket or Petrol stations? Of course the former being typically cheaper, but some feel what is offered at Petrol Stations is better. Or do you not have a particular view and just put 'whatever petrol' in and where you happen to pass when running low?

The three factors for those who make a concious choice other than price of course may likely be:
1: Performance
2: MPG
3: Emissions - important for the MOT pass.
Or are there others for you?:derr:

I'll kick-off by saying I used to always use Super Unleaded in the FRP, (normally BP 97 RON or Tesco 99 RON) but if used more every-day and with much higher petrol prices over the recent years, using normal unleaded has a greater appeal at often 10p a litre less (£3 - 4 a fill-up difference can add-up over a year)

Would welcome discussion on the topic and to see what people think by way of the poll too.

I tend to fill up from the one petrol station, 'Sainsbury's in Chelmsford'. But this is only because i do very little miles in mine and i'm known to work out how much extra fuel is needed and taking the extra when going to car shows and meets a bit feather away.

Used to be V Power all the time now its Momentum (tesco99) as I genuinely feel its better than Shell and I think its also cheaper.

Cheers

+1 for Momentum 99 - had my ECU tweaked by Tremona to make use of it. (not a Racing Puma, though, sadly... yet!)

I generally use Shell or BP fuels. Because my mileage is so low I tend to use the higher octane variants as cost doesn't really factor into the equation.

Unless your car has the ECU reprogrammed the extra octane petrol catagoricaly makes no difference what so ever, it doesn't protect your engine, it doesn't increase mpg or bhp unless your car is designed to run on it

Interesting. Where and who would make/tweak your ECU to make use of the additional potency?

I found this out by pure chance one day when I really needed to fill up but all they had was super and was amazed by how more eager the car felt running on it. Did a little detective work and found that a previous owner had the car mapped to take advantage of super.
I always use it now and if I have to use regular the car feels, I wouldnt say slugish but doesnt seem as happy with it, just wish it wasnt as expensive :(

The only time I put anything other than bp ultimate in the FRP is when I can't get hold of it. I always find she does more miles on the tank when I use it over anything else on the market

Lots of people and mags seem to be raving about Momentum 99

I use V Power and have no complaints

I'm adding another update into this as I've made another change to my fuel buying habits.

Following hearing a review which compared different fuels, and what came out top I've started to use Shell V Power. I didn't have this on my radar particularly in the past as there not a Shell garage on my doorstep, and if buying at my nearest one, it still requires a trip of a few miles. I was also somewhat sceptical as to how much difference it could really make, but wanted to give it a go compared to other 'premium' fuels I've used in the past.

BUT to my delight. I've found it to be just brilliant - Seriously so. Posted Image It's not just a case of 'maybe it might be a bit better'. It really makes the whole car come alive more and is genuinely noticeable, particularly in the power band between 4000-5500 RPM Posted Image

The FRP so much more extra-eager now - much better than any other brands of Ultimate/97/99 Ron I've tried. So I've now decided to always use it in the future unless I'm ever in a situation when I need fuel, and really can't find it en-route etc where I am.

Mine gets whichever petrol station is closest when the light comes on! Not seen any difference in performance from higher octane but tesco do the 99 ron unleaded which does seem to last a little longer but then costs more so no point.

Having raced karts for a number of years (albeit using high revving two stroke engines), the higher octane certainly makes a big difference although you have to set the engine up (air/ fuel mix etc) to benefit from the bigger bang so would agree from some of the posts here around tweaking the ECU...I get mine where I know it's busy so you know the fuel is replenished regularly and is a fresh as it can be. This is the key deciding factor for me. Back to back tests on old v fresh fuel is startling...

.....the alternative is to only drive on cool slightly moist days...best conditions for petrol to work properly ;-)
