Hi

i wonder if anybody can help me or has experienced the problem i have been having with my puma - the temperature reading is constantly overheating ie going to red after the 1st 4 miles or so. The fan switch does kick in but not enough to cool it down and the only time it will cool down is when you put the heater onto hot in the car. The hoses have been checked for temperature reading by a mechanic and seem normal

can anyone help ????

sounds like failure of the thermostat as it circulates the water around the engine until it heats up (ironically to protect the engine!) then opens to allow the water to the radiator at a certain temperature.

As the heater feed comes off inside the thermostat that is why when you turn the fan to hot it cools the engine as the heater matrix is basically a mini radiator.

Don't drive it in the red unless you want terminal damage!

cheers for that, but according to mechanic who looked at it said that it is very rare that thermostats go on them, even tho the hose that goes into the thermostat was bulging a bit when it gets overheated. Also it does have 102000 miles

Could be head Gasket or air lock if the water has been changed recently

I killed a Fiat Panda once by driving it about 200 miles in 30°C heat with a blown water pump. Couldn't understand why it kept overheating and cutting out...last car my mum (I was 18 at the time) ever lent me!!!

Alumuinium Engine block, once cooled down, was sooooo warped the whole lot had to be rebored and all replaced...probably at a higher cost than replacing the car! :!: comp.gif

Blew up an XR2i when the water pump went on the motorway.

The cam belt snapped as the temp. hit the red and wrote off most of the head.

didn't help that the engine was around 5000 rpm as I was nailling it at the time!

rebuilt it then the electrics melted as the car was still damp even though I had a 1kw fan heater in it for 48 hours!

I have just replaced thermostat, bulging hose AND NOW RADIATOR.and still overheating,I have now been told that it is the cylinder head.I always thought that if it was cylinder head you would have 1. loss of water 2. sludge in oil filler area 3. loss of power with white smoke coming out of the exhaust, but no.I have also been told that it could be the temperature unit.If so can anyone tell me were it ,how much and could it be that.please help if anyone can.

Compression test to check head gasket.

Failing that Pumabuild or pumaspeed as they know what they are doing.

Sounds like the thermostat is not opening. Try to stop when hot and check if the front is hot. If not, then the water is not flowing. If yes, don't know. Check coolant level. Check it in the morning and while running. Should go down a bit (but I'm not sure).

BTW: My previos car's engine head break apart when my thermometer stock for a while and i didn't noticed this and drove highway for about 20 minutes. But the car was still able to travel next 200 km to next service smile.gif Great car smile.gif But, that's a bit OT.

I am so not technically minded mate, but sounds like you are forking out a fair bit for parts/spares and no doubt labour...... mad.gif
:sorry: to hear that, can you insist that they just do the job right and 1st time, without having to keep experimenting on replacement parts 9.gif

i think it would be a very good idea to have a block test to see if the head gasket has gone

that could turn out to be very expensive aswell

This may sound stupid but who replaced the thermostat, and did they put it in correctly i.e. the right way round. i am not too familiar with the engine on the puma but it could be the prob. everything you say leads to the stat, cant you take your old stat put a nice hole through it and see if it still does it? as then there will be no restriction (only short term to test), other than that a blockage of somekind, and why did you replace the rad then?
