If the diode's gone in the alternator, the juice in the battery will try to flow the wrong way and turn the alternator into an electric motor, flattening the battery.

1.7 Pumas have a braided earthing strap that runs from the rear of the engine to an earthing point on the bulkhead. You might as well check that this strap is present and in good condition while you're at it.

replaced mine the other day - got a replacement earth strap from an electrician in work,
the other one fell apart when i touched it

They do tend to corrode pretty quickly.

You used to be able to replace just the diode pack, but I don't know if you can with the Puma's.

As for the strap, Id like to change it to one thats the same as the negative to car body one but i think it would melt!
